As November 3rd, 2020 slowly and steadily approaches, Donald Trump continues to double down on his belief that Coronavirus is something not to be taken seriously. He has been quoted as saying:
Now we have tested, almost 40 million people. By so doing, we show cases — 99% of which are totally harmless — results that no other country can show because no other country has testing that we have. Not in terms of the numbers, or in terms of the quality.
This is both patently and dangerously false. Furthermore, he has dug in his heels on racial divisiveness by playing into his support base’s fears of rapid social change. These actions are beguiling because Trump is, by most accounts, behind in polling in double digit territory. What could this really mean?
Let us entertain for a moment that Trump knows and expects that he will lose come November. Furthermore, let us imagine that he suspects that his bedrock support base, the white nationalist movement, might be psychologically unstable. Trump wants to remain in power and he has this almost unyielding support of this movement. So in theory, he could incite all of the white nationalist splinter groups into a massive and violent form of civil unrest, using this as a pretext for declaring martial law.
By oxygenating the racial division and conspiracy theorist fires, Trump could create the kind of chaos that he could then potentially use as a power grab. While we are busy fighting each other, he swoops in and America’s turn towards fascism becomes complete. The stark cold reality is that Trump cares for nobody but himself and his own self interests. If he can play groups of people against each other for his own entertainment or personal gain, he has proven time and again that he will do so.
As sinister as this could be, it is neither original nor particularly difficult to do. Playing two or more groups off of each other is not rocket science and we know Donald Trump is on the lower functioning, helter skelter side of psychopathy. We have seen dictators and tin pot despots do this time and again throughout history, intelligence notwithstanding. Kim Jong Un is arguably about the same level of intelligence as Donald Trump. What is more frightening is how America may end up enabling its own self destruction. A house divided, is a house conquered.
