In the world of psychiatry and psychology, a personality disorder is defined as something that is socially learned and often results from somebody’s upbringing. Personality disorders are learned from a paternal figure from the child observing the parent’s behavior or the child could be expressly taught to behave this way. I have recently begun thinking that conservatism could reasonably be considered a personality disorder. The reasons for this are quite startling.
The vocal conservatives display a marked and pronounced lack of empathy for those most vulnerable in society; to include the mentally ill, the marginalized, the disabled, and the disenfranchised. This is evidenced in the way they advocate for budget cuts to social welfare programs, an end to a minimum wage, and even assign blame to the disabled for their position in life. The blame assignment on the individual suffering is not grounded in any kind of reality because it is well understood and documented that a capitalist society is Social Darwinian. A Social Darwinian society is essentially survival of the financially fittest.
Part and parcel with a Social Darwinism and a lack of empathy comes a type of Anti-Social Personality Disorder that involves playing groups off of one another. Conservatives like Donald Trump and his elected official supporters in the House and Senate purposely try to divide the working class along racial and socioeconomic lines. It can reasonably be concluded that this division is done for self promotion, and in the extreme case of Donald Trump, for personal enjoyment and satisfaction. This is not normative behavior by any stretch of the imagination.
Finally, conservatives use something that many are very passionate about as a tool of control: religion. Conservatives use this very tool to play up on the basic need of human beings to feel spiritually connected and to have their emotional pain relieved. Conservatives thus use the bible to justify their personal hatred of and distaste for the LGBTQ community. So pronounced is their hatred of this community, that they get personal satisfaction through said community’s suffering. Furthermore, they make claims of being religious to win over the large religious segment while simultaneously doing the exact opposite of what religious figures like Jesus Christ would preach.
It is just about time for the Diagnostic and Statistics Manual (DSM V) to identify conservatism as a personality disorder because it flies in the face of normative behavior. In fact, even in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary, conservatives continue to promote wild, disproven theories; which is to say cognitive dissonance. Cognitive dissonance of this magnitude is dangerous; a disaster waiting to happen.
