Last weekend was amazingly productive and I feel really good about what I achieved. On Saturday, I took two online courses on WordPress to bone up on it a little bit. Despite the extra time added by needing to take public transportation, I got a lot of errands completed. Finally, on Saturday afternoon and evening, I completed version 2 of my blog website which morphed it into more of an about me website that includes a blog. I am happy with the way it came out.
Sunday was a big organization day and paying bills. While paying bills is never exactly fun, it feels good to not have them hanging over my head. Since I finished the lion’s share of this in the morning, I decided to go to lunch with Rob, new friend that I made at the partial hospitalization program that I am going to. Rob has an incredibly dry sense of humor with a deadpan delivery so if you did not know him, you would think he is probably rude. I am trying to get him to smile a little as he delivers the humor so people do not mistake him for being unfriendly when the complete opposite is true.
Since so much god achieved, I figured I earned a little television time and watched the classic Arnold Schwarzenegger movie Predator and I also watched the Denzel Washington and Chris Pine Unstoppable. In between the two movies, my brother gave me a call with some somewhat sad news: he is struggling to get new customers for his construction business. Ethan has realized that he actually needs to do some marketing so he asked me to build him a website and I will gladly do this for him. I even found a WordPress theme and plugins with which to get started.
Running a business is always a challenging endeaviour and I am going to do my level best to help my brother. I am glad that he is making up business cards and I asked him for some that I could potentially give out on his behalf. If I have learned one thing about life over the past year, it is that you never know what direction it will take you. I have an acquaintenace named Adam who is the manager of a pizza restaurant. He asked me about my brother and the remodelling. It would be great if I could help my brother close this sale and get him some more work.
One of the hardest aspects of running a business is marketing and getting known and this is where I struggled mightily. In the ocean of people, how do you stand out and get people to come to you? I am no marketing guru by any stretch but I might tell my brother about business marketing groups. The marketing groups suck however because they are mostly selling to each other. When I paid to be a member of one group, not one single member helped me to get any business: it was something of a waste. However, to be fair, I did not really help them either and you have to give to get.
