Now that sleep is less of an issue than it was, I want to reduce melatonin from 6mg to 3mg because the dreams that I am having are getting way too vivid and are borderline nightmares. Just to be extra safe I asked my psychiatrist if this was okay because she needs to be in the know when I request a change like this. I absolutely did not sleep well last night and the last dream sequence I had was really disconcerting.
This morning I did some very cursory research on melatonin and it seems that, in higher doses, it would be a contributing factor to vivid dreaming because it is supposed to help with REM sleep. Given the improvement in my mental health symptoms, maybe a smaller dose of melatonin might be in order because I just want to sleep and would like to avoid this kind of dreaming. But again, my psychiatrist ultimately has to have some say because making a change in medicinal routine can have a cascading effect that can be unpredictable.
