The mission for today is to simply stay out of the hospital. Thankfully I do not feel any worse today than I did yesterday and I might actually feel a little bit better. Yesterday I learned about one of the gig economy companies called HopDrive. In a nutshell, HopDrive does vehicle transportation and delivery for car dealerships and the like. They seem to have a pretty fair policy towards contractors. If there is no vehicle available to transport back to our point of origin, they pay for a Lyft to get you back to your car. This is something that could work for me because social interaction would be minimal, unlike doing something like DoorDash, GrubHub, or Uber. As an added bonus I could work pretty much when I want. Still I hate the gig economy because sometimes you pay to do their work.
I also have to call the Delaware Division of Vocational Rehabilitation and the Delaware State Housing Authority. The Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR) will help with supported employment and the job search. Services are available to disabled people like myself for free because I am on Social Security Disability. I have my doubts that they can really help because I have been through this process before unsucessfully, albeit in a different state though. Working in the gig economy might be okay for the short term, but long term, the only benefits are for the gig economy company, not the independent contractor. Finally, I have to see where I am at in the process of getting my rental housing assistance through the state housing authority.
The one advantage of working through the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation is they could possibly present some different options for work when I have no idea what I really want to do. I do not even know what I am capable of doing right now. I guess I have to sit down and try to think about this but I do not have the concentration level to consider it much past feeling the heavy sense of despair about my future. The best option I have right now is HopDrive because I know it is something I can do and do well. I have a friend who’s brother works in the gig economy for Uber and Lyft and he has done it full time for several years. He makes enough money to meet his bills and has a little bit leftover for whatever. The advantage of the gig economy is work on your own terms but it is also suffer on your own terms.
I wonder what kind of work from home opportunities exist. Maybe that is something I could bring up with DVR once my applications for services is approved. Maybe there is some form of work that will allow me to work from home that I haven’t thought of or do not know about. For now, I think I will simply muddle through today and get done what I can accomplish and not worry about what I am unable to. It is just another day in paradise.
