Typically a sleepless night is not really a good thing, but strangely, I feel rather rested and with a sense of some purpose. Last night some creative writing ideas popped up, and ofttimes when I get exciting ideas, they kind of reverberate in my head. Suffice it to say that I developed several different ideas for longer short stories. With my mind going at warp speed, I decided a Google search would be in order and I happened upon this link about novellas.
Eureka! This turned out to be the exact format that interests me. I tried to sit down once to write a novel and found that format to be too long and a short story to be, well, too short. After reading, Deverell’s write-up on the novella I found the answer I was looking for with some tips on how to get started. Prior to this I had no idea that such a format even existed. And that should come as no surprise since I was neither English nor Creative Writing major.
Since I can really only spend, at most, two to three hours per day applying to jobs, I might as well spend the remaining hours doing something that can be both entertaining and productive. The challenge today is character and setting development. According to the article, taking careful time to do this is even more important in a novella. I cannot exactly see why just yet so I will take it at face value.
My plan is to create a collection of novellas and self-publish them but that’s quite a bit further on down the pike. For now, it is time to take the basic ideas and plan out a story. Today I am going to search for a character development template that I can adapt for my purposes or possibly create my own.
Finally, I recall my high school writing teacher’s advice about reflective writing. She always recommended doing some reflective writing as a warm-up session to get the creative juices flowing. The modern day equivalent of is the use of a blog. I’ve been using my blog purely for getting what’s frustrating me off of my chest but this could also be a powerful tool for simply putting the brain in work mode.
