For some reason I woke up this morning feeling like I wanted to be productive. The Cisco Certified Network Associate program that I am in requires me to make a concerted effort towards getting meaningful, professional employment. Today I looked through the weekly list and found two jobs that would be worthwhile. One in particular caught my fancy: Linode. They have a posting for both a Junior and Senior Network Engineer role. I applied for the junior one.
One of my dreams was to be able to do something professionally with open source at a company specializing in open source-centric technologies. I had no idea that Linode was even local to me. It is a bit of a long shot because all of my open source stuff has been stuff that I did in my home lab; none of it paid. I would even be happy to simply be given a shot at the role because of the perk of a free MacBook Pro and the very casual dress environment. But the ultimate perk remains being able to work in open source. That would be worth a lower salary simply for the experience.
I also applied for a Tier 1 Network Operating Center Technician (NOC) position. I do not think I will like this position as much as Linode and the learning that I would get at Linode would be much more valuable. The upshot of the NOC position would a shorter commute but it would be highly regimented and process-oriented. Still, both are good opportunities. At this point, simply getting my foot in the door would be great. I cannot wait to see what next week will bring. I am ready to get back to work in a meaningful way and I feel like I’ve had a productive morning.
