It is really refreshing to wake up this morning and see #PresidentSanders trending on Twitter. I do not know what this means other than enough people caught on to the hash tag to make it trend. Still, on what promises to be a tough day, I would rather have something to make me smile. This much said, I caution against too much optimism because Bernie is but one man and he has warned us that his power is limited.
The President of the United States of America is but one person and can only do so much. In order for Bernie to be an effective president, he knows that he must have allies in the house and senate. He knows that he alone cannot get the programs that the working class need to live in dignity and financial security. This is why it is not enough to simply put Bernie in the White House. We have to get rid of Lindsey Graham, Mitch McConnell, Nancy Pelosi, and others that do not back progressive programs.
A President Bernie Sanders with Nancy Pelosi in the House and Mitch McConnell in the Senate would bring nothing but heartache and disappointment to Sanders’ followers. We would simply see legislative gridlock and four years of nothing. Therefore we cannot just focus on getting Bernie elected whilst being blind to the other seats in government. All of the roadblocks to Medicare For All and other programs must be removed.
So please do not just donate to Bernie. Please also give what you can to the progressive candidates and the candidates challenging McConnell and Graham.
