I have begun working on my very first novella and I am kind of excited because I’ve always wanted to dabble a bit in creative writing. The websites that I looked at were really helpful in getting my thoughts organized. The first step has been to create a setting for the story and this one will be a dystopian, hellscape that will make The Hunger Games, look positively democratic. Now I will have to develop some sort of plot.
I am thinking this to be along the lines of dissent and political separatism. I am setting this in 2100 A.D. after an apocalypse which I do not quite know how I want to play out. There are options like nuclear winter, maybe simply a Roman-esque collapse? Would it be bloody or violent or to leave this to the reader’s imagination? These are all things that remain to be answered.
I have some titles and settings in mind for a few others. One would be a historical fiction and another would be somewhat genre bending. I don’t know quite what directions these will take. I have some ideas based on the media and news. And at least one other will explore psychopathy and specific mental illness. The general path that I am taking is exploring very divisive social, racial, economic, and healthcare justice and weaving them into stories designed to take extreme looks.
I need also to create characters that are well developed and can be memorable for both good and evil reasons. These characters must be entirely possible and plausible and therein lies the challenge. I did find a really good character development template that asks about 200 questions. I seem to have an easier time creating settings so I might work on few more of these first.
