We are in an age of politics as optics, the appearance of doing something to fix the problems of society. In reality, both Democrats, Republicans, and their wealthy backers are benefiting tremendously from the dysfunction. Regardless of the party in power, there is really only one group that reaps the rewards and that is the 1%. If you follow the UK and Brexit, the same kinds of things are playing out there as well.
Since I tend to look at Twitter as kind of a bellwether of politics, it makes sense to analyze a tweet and I will use my favorite target, Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Here is one of her more recent tweets:
Nancy Pelosi only offers a condemnation of Donald Trump without offering a specific solution or any efforts to pass legislation opening the borders to our Bahamanian brethren that are suffering. The condemnation apparently is enough to appease the centrists and convince them that government is doing something. But this is just optics as many of us on the progressive left know that these words are as empty as offering “thoughts and prayers.”
I can only draw the conclusion that both parties are complicit in keeping the spotlight on social issues and off of ones that would negatively impact corporations and the status of the 1%. The more distracted and divided we are, the more the wealthy and elite can work behind the scenes (and go ultimately unnoticed) at furthering their own agendas. This technique was pioneered by the ever astute and observant Sun Tzu.
Mitch McConnell and Nancy Pelosi are merely actors on the grand stage of politics. Both the Senate Majority Leader and Speaker of the House know how important it is for them to preserve the status quo. Their little public spats are doing exactly what they have been carefully crafted to do, divert attention away from income inequality, Medicare For All, and Housing for all. I would not be shocked if the two leaders met behind closed doors and colluded on a game plan to preserve this status quo of their wealthy backers.
There is no interest in truly fixing what is wrong in America. Both Pelosi and McConnell know fully well what is and what is not broken in America. They know that the aspects of America that are broken, benefit them directly. The only way to begin fixing this is to demand real solutions and replacing elected officials whom fail to produce.
