I am in kind of a personal debate right now: Do I host my own email or do I just continue forwarding it to my gmail address. On one level this is something that I would like to do just as a learning experience but it’s going to take some daily feeding and care. If I continue to use Gmail, I definitely have the ease of use/low maintenance factor but I give up a lot of control and privacy. Self-hosting email myself puts me entirely in control, and with that, comes the daily maintenance and the potential for lost email if I do something stoopid.
I guess I can begin to implement this slowly. Simply forwarding email from my domain to my Gmail address makes spam control very difficult. I have OpenBSD’s spamd operating in default greylisting mode and I am just getting it dialed in. I have built a fairly decent list of trusted email providers that can be safely added to a nospamd bypass table. I guess the next step is turning off forwarding and delivering everything locally.
I haven’t given out the email address just yet so I think I can begin the fun. Well, I’ll do it one step at a time. I’ll report back as learn.
