This evening I ventured to downtown Philly for a movie night with a Meetup group that I am with. I don’t often participate but I needed a break from studies. While walking to the Ritz at the Bourse I saw something that was simultaneously sad and touching. Suffice it to say that it touched my soul. As I was walking towards the theater, I saw a homeless man feeding his cat.
As you probably figured from the title of this blog, I am very much a cat dude so watching this man feed his cat was powerful. He kept coaxing it to eat the lunchmeat turkey he was feeding it while saying, “Come on little guy. Eat up …. I don’t know when the next meal is going to be.” Imagine so selfless act that this man would feed his cat before himself. I got angry at everyone passing him; wanting him out of sight and out of mind. There was a subway near by so ordered a foot long philly steak and cheese with extra meat.
I gave this foot long philly steak to him and said, “Because you both need strength to survive ….” I could see tears forming in his eyes and he looked away. I understand that he could not muster the words but the gratitude was self-evident. I cannot understand how, in the wealthiest nation in history, we have folks homeless and living on the streets.
I honestly wish there was something more I could do for this man because, as the old saying goes, “Give a man a fish, he’ll eat for a day. Teach him to fish and he’ll eat for life.” but the idea was escaping me. I hope to see him one day again with an answer. I watched the man and his cat take a few bites. The cat made some snorting sounds with the warm beef being delicious and all. I don’t feel like I did much good but to do nothing at all just seemed to be absolutely the wrong move.
