Since I honestly do not feel ready to jump back into full-time employment, I have decided that I would start volunteering somewhere just to keep busy and perhaps get used to working (after a fashion) again. As all of my readers undoubtedly know, I am a feline enthusiast and so is my neighbor. Yesterday, I asked my neighbor if there is a local animal welfare organization other than the Delaware Humane Association or the Brandywine Valley S.P.C.A. While I would like to volunteer for either of those organizations, the Delaware Humane Association is not currently looking for volunteers due to the COVID-19 situation and Brandywine Valley is just too far meaning that I would incur a lot of extra expense getting there. My nice neighbor told me about an organization called Faithful Friends.
I did some basic research on the organization and they seem really good so I filled out the application to volunteer as I would like to work specifically with the cats in need. I don’t mind cleaning litterboxes and cat rooms but I am hoping that they have some needs to socialize them as well. Sometimes when cats come in to a shelter, they need to be gradually accustomed to people. One of the best ways to do this is to simply sit in a cat room with a book, start reading, and see which adventurous feline approaches. Since cat’s noses are many times more powerful than our own, often it is our scents that help a cat make the determination whether or not it feels you are a threat or safe.
Once said aforementioned adventurious feline decides to explore the new human being in its presence, offering a closed fist for the cat to smell and head bunt is another way to reach out. If the kitty will accept that, often times you can offer him or her pets. Socializing cats is something I enjoy doing and I have a way with felines that generally they warm up to me and trust me. Some take longer than others but even the most skiddish of the variety will eventually accept pets and not be afraid of my presence. I enjoy the challenge of winning the trust and adoration of a cat. Once you win their ultimate trust, you have a very strong life-long bond. Now all I have to do is wait for Faithful Friends to reach out to me with an email stating that I have been approved to sign up for a volunteer orientation slo and I hope it happens soon because I am truly chomping at the bit to have some routine and activity.
