Just last week I read a really insightful tweet that pointed out that freedom means different things to different people. To me and most of the leftists out there freedom generally means the guarantee of inalienable rights, like freedom of speech, expression, etc. I even take this a step further to include things like housing, clothing, food, and home guarantees as part of inalienable rights. I wish I could remember the twitter user that authored the tweet because it was so insightful. Anyhow, the tweet reasonably observed that the conservative Republican definition of freedom is the ability to act overtly racist and to not feel that they have to hide behind the curtain of political correctness.
Donald Trump brought this ugly truth about conservatism in America to light. The conservative idea of freedom is the freedom to openly discriminate in America: be it social and economic. Otherwise, conservative actions consistently tread on inalienable rights. Conservatives can nominally be blamed for ramrodding legislation like the Patriot Act which effectively turned America into a surveillance state. Conservatives typically advocate for stiff and harsh sentences for petty crimes for the poor. Conservatives get laws enacted that allow them to victimize the poor through payday and auto title lending schemes that actually do take freedoms away from real people. These schemes have real social and economic consequences for the poor.
If working class Republicans would stop to think for a moment about whom they are voting in to office, they would see that they’re voting away their rights. Working class Republicans have weakened unions, made healthcare and social services less accessible, and even voted away their reproductive rights. But the freedom to openly demonize another race, gender, color, or creed seems to be cherished. Even the people of color that identify as conservative demonize their own culture. Contrast this to progressives and leftists that fight for economic and social freedoms under the banner of inalienable rights. We know that freedom is not simple economic or expressive but it’s having guarantees of housing, healthcare, food, and clothing. We know that having stable housing is a fundamental premise of mental health and wellness.
Freedom is exploit and freedom to hurt another human being is not freedom but fascism. I will conclude on that note. Freedom is not the freedom to be actively sociopathic or psychopathic.
