On-Premises Hosting Trend

I am very encouraged to see information technology trending away from the cloud again and back to on premises computing. Yes, I emphasized the word premises because so many people misuse it as premise. I digress; I’m just happy to see this trend going on. Also, we are starting to see more open source software and operating systems in the technology stacks of businesses. It turns out that Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 don’t quite live up to the hype.

Anyhow, I just built out a small-ish virtual machine as a test box which will eventually house my business’ software and data. Everything on it is freely available and open source. Who needs Microsoft anymore? I will run this test VM for about 30 days to see how reliable it is. If it passes muster, I’ll move even my personal email from Zoho to my own solution.

The key is having a good and practiced disaster recovery plan. That’s one of the things that I am going to test. I’m going to try doing a system clone as a backup and restore. Another fun test I guess.
